Salone del Mobile 2017: Day Two

This week we continue with an overview of the most interesting trends seen at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan. Last time we talked about lighting solutions to conquer this year, so this time we return to the classics. We had so much fun at the fair and hope to bring at least a part of the joy to you.

This year, a design of the additional elements is even more interesting than usual. This applies primarily to the chests of drawers and bedside tables both with rounded and sharp corners.

When it comes to the design of closets and dressers, the invisible handles are still popular. These elements are generally opened by carefully carved ruts, via touch system or by the unusually shaped surfaces.

After several days spent at the fair, we had a strange feeling that we have missed all elements made of the polished wood. And that’s because there weren’t any. The wood is usually waxed and it no longer looks raw. Moreover, all the wood was magnificently processed, yet there was no high polish.

Marble is increasingly common when it comes to the dining table design. It is usually combined with wood and sometimes with leather.

The leather and plush seem to be an increasingly popular combination. Leather furniture with plush pillows (and vice versa) is an excellent example. Also, the upholstery is now being made of different material combinations. The leather is usually on the outside with fabrics on the inner side, often with their own pattern.

At several booths, we saw a quite convenient trend where two separate tables share a print, so they can be used combined or separately. There are also club tables of various shapes and structures often intertwined in interesting combinations.

The edges of the upper plates at club tables and the dressers are often elevated. On numerous examples, we can see cuts in different colors, which visually divides the front into several separate units, and makes the element more interesting.#8

Many tables have a so-called “live edge”. This is the specific processing of the material, which can be explained as an edited version of the raw materials that look really impressive.

Low edges and the ones with an angle are present everywhere – on dressers, tables, chests of drawers, as well as on various other elements.

Rounded and low chairs that are seemingly floating through space are extremely interesting.

The same applies to the chairs and sofas with upholstery that combines handrail and a seating area and, thus, looks like it’s draped over chairs.

The colors presented above are all pastel shades. Bright colors were mostly excluded this year. Pastel olive green, pastel blue, green, turquoise, color, indigo blue, a combination of shades of gray with darker yellow… Those were the shades that we have seen countless times. Besides these colors, the combination of white MDF and natural wood is still almost unavoidable.

Dining tables with legs of an oblique angle and chamfers were a hit (as seen in the featured photo, as well).

The same applies to tables and dressers where some parts were covered with leather and others with wood.

To our great (and pleasant) surprise, navy elements are trendy again. Tight sailor’s  rope or leather twisted in shape of a rope are now considered popular design details. For us, sea dogs with the eyes of designers, this was the true finale of the second day.
